This dog was a handful… She was very strong and very energetic and she had been in the shelter entirely too long. When anyone would come close to her kennel she would jump up and in circles and basically scare of the potential adopter so that it rarely got to a point when someone would actually want to bring her out of the kennel for an introduction. If she did get out for an introduction she had much too much pent up energy from not getting enough exercise… so she did not show well on intros either.
The worst part was that she seemed to be getting worse.
She was house trained, and had the basic commands down and loved to fetch, so much like Sweet Pea. We took some video of her at the shelter and made another one of our earliest video efforts.

It was a bit of a mystery why such a great dog wasn’t adopted sooner.  Partially, it may have been because of her energy whenever she would get out of her kennel to meet someone.  It was intimidating to the average person who might be concerned with their preconceptions of the breed to begin with.  So many people met with Sweet Pea, but chose other dogs.

This was the first time we brought one of the shelter dogs into the Rogister home for an overnight visit.  Sweet Pea had a wonderful time.  She had a bath, went for a roller blade, swam in the ocean and got to hang out with our dog Scout all day long.

In the end Sweet Pea was adopted into a family with another dog and is now a great member of a big happy family.

Hannah is a Pitbull mix and Sookie a Rotweiller mix.  Both bully breeds, and both totally great intelligent and extreemely loyal dogs.  But when adopters come to look at them in the shelter, and take them out of their kennels they seem hyper and out of control.  This is mostly because although the SPCA does everything it can to get these dogs walked and excercised, for athletic breeds, it is not enough.  so when they do get out they have so much energy to burn off that they need to go nuts as soon as they are not confined to the walls of their cages.

There are many reasons a dog may take longer to adopt, black dogs for example are typically in kennels longer than lighter colored dogs… Puppy’s of course are adopted right away, but sometimes older dogs are not so lucky.  Some breeds, like pitbulls or American Staffordshire terriers, or any of the bully breeds also can sometimes stay in kennels longer.  Even thought in many people opinions, mine included they are the best dogs out there.

Besides all of this, some dogs just do not give a good impression when people come to adopt them.  They don’t “show” well.  They may be high energy and of course they are not getting enough exercise in the kennel, so they appear to hyper to perspective adopters.  The stress of the kennel just gets to some dogs more than others, so they might seem aloof or dis-interested when adopters meet them.

These are the cases that we try to work with.  My wife Kristy and I bring the dogs into our homes for a Doggy Weekend Adventure away from the stresses of the kennel, so we can really see what the dog is like, and how they behave in a home environment.  We do some training with them and video them as they intract with our dog and two cats, as well as how they behave in regular day to day activities like taking baths or going for walks.

We have been releasing these videos on YouTube and linking them to the SPCA Tampa Bay Website.  We also Prepare a mini photo/biography/story about the dog which we put on their kennel to draw even more attention to the animal from foot traffic in the shelter.  Overall, the success of these videos has been overwelming.  With the help of all the volunteers at the SPCA who distribute these video to others or Like them on faceboook or distribute them through other social networks.  All of the Dogs we have featured have been adopted.

I will post all the videos on this blog and I will create a special web page to highlight each induvidual dog and their story…  They have all been awesome.

The JOE ROGISTER / JFR STUDIOS You Tube Channel

I am going to begin a series of videos from the Joe Rogister production company (JFR studios) that I hope will help show some of the dogs as I see them every week, as awesome animals that are just waiting for some one to love.  If they get that, they have so much love to give back.

At the SPCA the many dedicated volunteers donate their time to ensure that these animals have the best experience possible at the shelter.  The dogs are walked multiple times per day by volunteers, and Family Dog Trainers work on their obedience training as well.

Every dog that is adopted from the SPCA is offered a free obedience class.  This class alone will give a great base for any family to start their new family down a great road to having a very happy life.

Joseph (Joe) Rogister
